    Some works I'd recommend to start off with: 5th Symphony - Highly succesful at the time it was written, Shostakovich managed to tread the fine line between personal expression and official approval by keeping his feelings and criticisms implicit in the music, while appearing to toe the party line in public. The last movement is particularly terrifying, especially the weird, insistent.
